EU funding of 514,000 euros for gender equality project

Oxfam, in partnership with the Gender Development Association and the Association for Development of Women and Legal Education launched a European Union funded project to promote gender equality yesterday in Vientiane.
The “Promoting Gender Equality through the Rule of Law and Good Governance” project was offic
ially launched with EU funding of 514,000 euros about 5.33 billion kip. The three-year project, which will be implemented by partnership organisations, aims at contributing to women having the right, capacity and opportunity to be safe from violence and enjoy their full and equal rights.

The Director of Gender Development Association, Boutsady Khounavong speaking at the launch of the project said that the project aims to build a strong and vibrant women’s movement comprising of women who are empowered individually and collectively to tackle the root causes of inequality and demand the full spectrum of their rights.
EU Chargé d’Affaires Michel Goffin said “Gender equality is one of the priorities in the EU development agenda in Laos and by providing financial support for this project; not only women rights will be enhanced, but we will also strengthen capacities for Lao CSOs and universities to better play their roles on this particular issue.”
The project will include capacity building and training on gender equality; a gender awareness campaign run through radio programmes and IEC material dissemination; and inclusion of gender studies into universities’ curriculums.
